Quilters interested in foundation paper piecing and meaningful, story‑driven design will have an opportunity this September when instructor Dana Jones leads a two‑day workshop, “Peace Cranes Over Hiroshima,” at the Gualala Arts Center.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, and Thursday, Sept. 17, in Coleman Hall. The fee is $120 for Gualala Arts members and $150 for nonmembers. Registration is available at GualalaArts.org or at the Gualala Arts front desk through Sept. 10. A $25 materials fee is payable directly to the instructor.

Jones designed and made “Peace Cranes Over Hiroshima” after visiting the peace park at the epicenter of the World War II atomic bombing in Hiroshima, Japan. The quilt’s foundation paper‑pieced design is based on an origami peace crane image from the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Experience with foundation paper piecing is helpful, and participants will explore color value to create the quilt’s three‑dimensional effect. Jones will also share tools, techniques and tips to support successful quiltmaking.

Jones began quilting in 2003 after attending a Martha Pullen quilt event in Huntsville, Alabama. While living in White Plains, New York, she continued her studies through classes and quilt events in the region. She began teaching in 2007 at Quilter’s Crossing in West Nyack, New York.

In 2009, Jones moved to Colorado and joined Quilters Newsletter magazine as an editor, becoming its leader less than a year later. She later served as editor of the SAQA Journal before focusing on her book, Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. Her work documenting more than 100 quiltmakers on a small Philippine island led to exhibitions at the National Quilt Museum, the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles and the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum.

Jones lives at 9,200 feet in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, where she designs and makes quilts, teaches, and writes about quiltmaking. She is known for her expertise in foundation paper piecing and insetting circles and has taught at quilt shops throughout Colorado, at Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and for more than 100 guilds across the United States and Canada. In 2022, she taught at International Quilt Festival in Houston and at American Quilter’s Society shows in Daytona Beach and Grand Rapids. She also offers open‑enrollment classes via Zoom.

She will also be presenting a lecture on Friday, September 18th during the PPQG meeting Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island.
