Gualala Arts is proud to present Henrik Swane Liisberg: A Retrospective, a special exhibition celebrating the life and creative evolution of an artist whose journey spans continents, disciplines, and decades. All proceeds from artwork sales will benefit Gualala Arts.

Henrik Swane Liisberg grew up in Denmark in a home alive with artistic influence. His family’s close ties to prominent painters—including members of the Swane family on his mother’s side—meant that conversations about art were part of daily life. These early experiences shaped his creative sensibilities and planted the seeds for a lifelong engagement with design and visual expression.

Liisberg graduated in 1974 from Denmark’s Design School in Copenhagen with a master’s degree in Furniture and Industrial Design. Before entering the program, he completed the rigorous Danish requirement of training as a journeyman in carpentry and cabinetmaking, grounding his design practice in craftsmanship and precision.

In 1978, he moved his office from New York to San Francisco, drawn to the beauty and creative energy of the Bay Area. His work in the U.S. office furniture industry flourished, resulting in numerous contract seating designs, several design awards, and invitations to lecture at furniture shows and industry events across the country.

Henrik and his wife, Hanne, relocated their business to the Sea Ranch/Gualala region in 1992. Two decades later, in 2012, they began spending more time in Tiburon while maintaining their northern home as a dedicated painting studio. It was there that Henrik returned to a long‑held dream. After a career defined by the exacting discipline of industrial design, he sought the freedom of abstraction and built himself a studio overlooking the Pacific.

Despite having no formal training in painting—and moments of doubt about whether he could paint at all—Henrik committed himself fully to the work. He ordered paint, canvas, panels, and brushes, closed the studio door, and began. In the quiet of that space, he found inspiration again, recalling the voices of the artists who once gathered in his childhood home.

Gualala Arts extends its heartfelt gratitude to Henrik for his generosity and contributions to our creative community, and we wish him the very best in his next chapter.
