Gualala Arts invites you to immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of Chinese Brush Painting during a two-day workshop led by acclaimed artist and instructor Andrea Allen. Held Saturday and Sunday, April 4 and 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Howell Conference Room, this hands-on experience offers a rare opportunity to explore ancient techniques and philosophies that continue to inspire artists around the world.
Participants will learn the foundational elements of Chinese Brush Painting, including grinding their own Sumi ink, loading the calligraphy brush, and applying dynasty-old brush strokes to handmade rice paper. Through the creation of bamboo, flowers, and other traditional motifs, students will also gain insight into Chinese symbolism and philosophy—enhancing the meditative and expressive nature of the art form.
Andrea Allen brings over three decades of experience to her teaching, blending the wisdom of the Chinese Masters with a subtle, contemporary flair. Her work is deeply rooted in traditional techniques, such as balancing painted and unpainted space to evoke tranquility and harmony. Andrea studied for six years under a Chinese Master and has exhibited extensively throughout the Bay Area, including at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Her paintings are held in private collections around the world.
Now based in Gualala, Andrea finds daily inspiration in the coastal landscape and vibrant local arts community. Her passion for sharing the serenity and vitality of Chinese Brush Painting shines through in every class she teaches.
The workshop fee is $125 for Gualala Arts members and $155 for non-members. A $40 materials fee is payable directly to the instructor. Advance registration is required by March 28. Sign up online at GualalaArts.org or in person at the Gualala Arts front desk. Materials list for students includes a water glass and two saucers.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this workshop offers a meaningful journey into an ancient art form that continues to resonate with beauty, balance, and spirit.
