The days of treating an iPhone camera as just a point-and-shoot device are over. On Saturday, Nov. 1, photography enthusiasts of all levels will gather at the Gualala Arts Center for an in-depth workshop aimed at unlocking the creative potential of their iPhones.

Led by seasoned photography instructors Susan and Neil Silverman, the iPhone Photography Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, November 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and promises a hands-on approach to mastering mobile photography. Participants will explore their iPhone’s built-in camera tools, including exposure control, multiple lenses, focus techniques, Live Photos, and more.

“This class is about going beyond simple snapshots,” the Silvermans said in a statement. “It’s about seeing the world as a photographer—using light, composition, and creative techniques to make images that stand out.”

Attendees will receive guidance on capturing compelling portraits, dynamic landscapes, and striking details in everyday scenes. The workshop is designed for all experience levels—from casual smartphone users to experienced photographers looking to refine their mobile photography skills.

Demonstrations will be conducted using the iPhone 16, though all phone types are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring a notepad and pen for taking notes, as well as a light snack or lunch for a break taken onsite.

Susan and Neil Silverman have been teaching photography for over 25 years at institutions like Santa Rosa Junior College, the Pacific Northwest Art School, and Point Reyes Field Institute. Their philosophy emphasizes quality over quantity, urging photographers to understand both technical controls and artistic composition.

The workshop costs $95 for Gualala Arts members and $125 for non-members. Registration is open at GualalaArts.org or at the Gualala Arts Front Desk. Gualala Arts retains a $35 cancellation fee, and refunds are not available after the registration deadline of October 24.
