Six decades after its founding, The Sea Ranch remains a beacon of innovative environmental design and community living. Originally envisioned by developer Oceanic California, Inc. and led by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, the coastal retreat has evolved from a bold architectural experiment into a lasting model of harmony between human habitation and nature.

To mark this milestone, The Sea Ranch Vision Committee is presenting an exhibition, “Design Environment Community,” which opens Friday, July 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Gualala Arts Jacob Foyer and will run through August 3. The exhibit showcases the origins of The Sea Ranch through archival photographs, drawings, and a striking model of Condo One, on loan from the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley.

Halprin’s commitment to working with the land rather than against it set the foundation for The Sea Ranch’s distinctive character. With carefully preserved riparian corridors, a shared Commons of meadow and forest, and architecture designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape, the development broke from conventional suburban planning and embraced environmental stewardship.

The exhibit features a video from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, offering insights from early architects and planners who helped shape The Sea Ranch’s legacy. Adding to the historical perspective, The Sea Ranch Lodge has contributed panels designed by Hall Kelley, showcasing Oceanic’s initial marketing efforts for the community.

Beyond its architectural achievements, The Sea Ranch has fostered a strong relationship with the surrounding Mendonoma region. A photographic frieze highlighting Sea Ranch residents within the broader Mendonoma community underscores this interwoven connection, recognizing the shared values and interdependence that have defined the area for generations.

Attendees are invited to explore the exhibition and reflect on the legacy of The Sea Ranch—how a once-radical vision of environmental living has become an enduring influence on sustainable design and community planning.
