The Gualala Arts Chamber Music Series is delighted to present a concert featuring the Klein Piano Trio, comprised of the talented Gabrielle Després on violin, James Baik with the cello, and Jung-Eun Kim at the piano. Gabrielle Després, a Canadian violinist, has established herself as a musician of exceptional artistry and integrity. Her impressive array of accolades includes first prizes at the Irving M. Klein International String Competition and the Juilliard Concerto Competition, among others. In 2024, she was honored with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award and the William Schuman Prize from Juilliard. Gabrielle’s performance history is equally distinguished, featuring solo appearances with renowned orchestras and active participation in prestigious music festivals. Her commitment to music extends beyond performance; she engages in educational outreach through programs like “Music for the Future,” bringing the transformative power of music to incarcerated individuals. A Kovner Fellowship recipient, Gabrielle is set to continue her advanced studies at Juilliard under the guidance of Catherine Cho.

Gabrielle currently plays on a violin of Zosimo Bergonzi and a bow of Étienne Pajeot, graciously provided to her by CANIMEX INC., from Drummondville, Quebec, Canada.

Jung-Eun Kim, a pianist celebrated for her exquisite artistry, has made a significant impact on the music world both as a soloist and a chamber musician. Her journey began in South Korea, where she debuted with the Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra at the tender age of 11. Her move to the United States marked a period of extensive performances and collaborations, including national radio features and partnerships with prominent musicians. As a chamber artist, she co-founded the L’arc Trio, which was recognized with an InterMusic SF grant and premiered a work by the esteemed composer Vivian Fung. Her academic achievements are equally impressive, having completed an Artist Diploma and double Master’s degrees at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of renowned instructors. Jung-Eun’s contributions to music, marked by technical mastery and emotional depth, have earned her acclaim and a distinguished place in the contemporary classical music scene.

James Baik, a cellist of remarkable talent, has been making waves in the classical music scene. His performances have been met with critical acclaim, notably his appearance at the 2021 Queen Elisabeth competition which garnered high praise from Le Soir for his lyrical warmth and sonic mastery. His journey has been marked by a series of prestigious accolades, including being a finalist at the 2019 Stulberg International String Competition and winning the first prize at the Irving M. Klein International Competition. Baik’s musical journey began with his debut solo in 2015, performing Saint-Saens’ Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Houston Civic Symphony Orchestra. His continued success saw him winning the DePaul Concerto Competition in 2018, reaching the finals at the Johansen International Competition, and concluding the year as a YoungArts finalist. His grand prize win at the Walgreens National Competition led to a celebrated performance of Schumann’s Cello Concerto, showcasing his profound musicality and establishing him as a cellist of exceptional caliber.
