Gualala Arts and Fred Adler present “Vuckovich in Concert”, Saturday, November 19 at 4:00 p.m. at Gualala Arts’ Coleman Hall. Larry Vuckovich will be performing as a soloist and also accompanied by Belgrade-born Buca Necak on acoustic bass. In addition, special guest guitarist Chris Doering will join Vuckovich on the pianist’s composition “Adler’s Allegro and Adagio”, written and performed a number of years ago in honor Fred Adler, the Gualala Arts Whale & Jazz Music Coordinator. Advance tickets are $29, $5 more the day of and are available at Gualala Arts, Dolphin Gallery, and online at EventBrite.com.
Larry Vuckovich has won acclaim from critics and jazz audiences for his deeply imaginative style and repertoire heard at prestigious North American and European jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals. He is equally at home in world music/classically influenced modal jazz as he is in hard-swinging bebop, post-bop, contemporary jazz, and down-home blues. The New York Times notes that his unique outlook and collection of influences “set him apart from most pianists who are heard regularly in New York”.
“Vuckovich in Concert” on November 19 will be a unique, solo concert event. Although Larry Vuckovich has appeared at Gualala Arts a number of times, he usually performs as part of an ensemble with multiple musicians, both instrumentalists and vocalists. As described by co-producer Fred Adler, “Larry Vuckovich is a formidable and swinging soloist and also an informative and entertaining jazz historian. On November 19, Larry will entertain with his favorite composers and compositions, plus the audience will be treated to a demonstration of varying tempos, piano styles, and rhythms, drawing from his seven decades of experience of performing with a veritable ‘who’s who’ of jazz masters— Gershwin, Cole Porter, Victor Young and more—throughout the globe.”
Chris Doering adds, “I am thrilled with this opportunity to share some wonderful music with pianist, composer and Bay Area jazz legend Larry Vuckovich. I’m really looking forward to hearing Larry play solo piano, and excited to be sitting in on two Vuckovich originals – “Adler’s Allegro & Adagio,” written for Fred Adler, and “Vince’s Boogaloo Blues,” a tribute to Vince Guaraldi. We’ll also play the beautiful Rodgers & Hart ballad ‘It’s Easy to Remember.’ Please consider this a personal invitation to join us this Saturday afternoon for a very special concert.
Vuckovich has been described by piano legend Barry Harris as “one of the premier West Coast pianists”, and has joined the legendary Marian McPartland for a performance and interviews on her show “Piano Jazz” program, heard on public radio across America. According to Jazz Times, Vuckovich ”is a pianist whose evocative touch and poetic (but unsentimental) sensibility convey the wisdom of deep musical life experience”. Tickets are available now for this unique concert event at Gualala Arts, Dolphin Gallery, and EventBrite.com.
