Meet the Judges

Gary Martin

For more than thirty years, Gary Martin built an international career as an art dealer, working with collectors, galleries, and artists while developing an extensive knowledge of the history of art and the art market. He later earned a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from San Jose State University, integrating Art History with the Humanities to strengthen his commitment to arts education. Today, he volunteers his time teaching art history to preschool through twelfth-grade students, introducing approximately 2,500 young people each month to the world’s artistic and cultural heritage. Through engaging presentations that span prehistoric cave paintings to contemporary art, his program inspires curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong appreciation for the visual arts, making art history accessible to students throughout rural Northern California.

Doug Volz

Doug Volz is a Northern California artist whose work spans visionary art, colored‑pencil mandalas, pastel landscapes, and mixed‑media explorations of light. Active for more than five decades, Volz has exhibited widely throughout Mendocino, Lake, and Sonoma counties, with additional early shows in the Bay Area. His career includes solo exhibitions, shared shows, curatorial work, and multiple museum presentations.

Volz’s first major exhibition, The Visionary Art of Douglas Volz, appeared at the Berkeley Psychic Institute in 1975, followed by Surface and Image at the Civic Arts Gallery in Walnut Creek in 1976. Through the 1980s and 1990s, he presented work across Willits, Ukiah, and Fort Bragg, including shared shows with Meridy Volz and Ada B. Fine, and thematic exhibitions such as Colored Pencil Mandalas (1987), Pastel Landscapes (1996), and The Light Series (1997).

In 1994, Volz served as both curator and exhibiting artist for Visionary Artists of Mendocino County at The Art Conspiracy in Ukiah. His work continued to gain regional visibility with solo exhibitions at The Hopland Brewery (1999) and a 30‑year retrospective at the Willits Center for the Arts in 2004.

Volz co‑curated Northern California Visionary Art: A Contemporary Legacy at the Grace Hudson Museum in 2008, further cementing his role in shaping the region’s artistic identity. His work appears in Artists of Inland Mendocino County, Book #2 (2010), and he returned to the Willits Center for the Arts in 2013 with The New Light Show.

From 2022 onward, Volz has been a frequent exhibitor at the Middletown Arts Center, contributing to themed shows including Belonging (2022), Outside In (2023), Changes (2023), The Space Between (2024), Right in Front of Me (2024), Entanglement (2025), and Configurations (2026). His 2023 solo retrospective Dark and Light at Gualala Arts Center featured 24 paintings, and he participated in the Grace Hudson Museum’s Back to the Land the same year.

Most recently, Volz presented Doug Volz – Colored Pencil Drawings at Fore Vineyards in 2024 and continues to exhibit new work throughout Lake and Mendocino counties.
