Contemporary Basketry

The Dolphin Gallery will present Contemporary Basketry, a new exhibition by contemporary pine needle artist Sandi Falk, opening Saturday, July 11, with a public reception from 1 to 3 p.m. The show will remain on view through July 26.

Falk, who began working in pine needle art in 2023, brings a fresh, modern sensibility to a traditional form. She first learned the craft from Pomo elder Oshie McGill and later continued her studies with instructor Bea Acosta at the Gualala Arts Center. Her work incorporates long‑leaf pine needles, colorful threads, and a variety of natural and decorative elements, resulting in baskets, mixed‑media gourds, and sculptural pieces that blend heritage with contemporary design.

Guided by an intuitive creative process, Falk allows each piece to evolve organically, letting color, texture, and form determine the final outcome. Contemporary Basketry offers visitors a look at an emerging artist expanding the possibilities of a time‑honored tradition.
