The landscapes of Northern California take center stage in a new solo exhibition by artist Victoria Veedell, opening Friday, June 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Jacob Foyer at the Gualala Arts Center. Titled Northern California Light: Witnessing Beauty, Witnessing Change, the show runs through July 5 and features a series of atmospheric paintings that invite viewers to reflect on the natural world—and their place within it.

Veedell’s work captures the region’s coastline, rivers, and ever-shifting light with a reverent eye and a contemplative hand. “Painting is my way of bearing witness,” she explains. “It’s a way to honor what is here now, while acknowledging the quiet urgency of its impermanence.”

Each canvas offers a moment of stillness, encouraging viewers to slow down and truly see. Through immersive color and subtle detail, Veedell explores the transformative power of nature and the emotional resonance of observation. Her process is rooted in presence—absorbing the hues, textures, and fleeting light that often go unnoticed in the rush of daily life.

“In a time when our environment faces mounting threats,” Veedell says, “this act of looking becomes a form of resistance. It’s a way to reconnect with something larger than ourselves.”

Northern California Light is more than a celebration of beauty—it’s a call to awareness. Through her paintings, Veedell hopes to deepen viewers’ appreciation for the fragile balance of the natural world and inspire a renewed sense of stewardship.
