Quilters inspired by the Mendonoma Coast’s dramatic scenery will have a chance to turn landscapes into fabric art during a two-day workshop led by instructor Margreth Barrett. The Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild will host the class at the Gualala Arts Center on Wednesday and Thursday, September 17–18, 2025  from 9:30 am – 4 pm.
Open to all skill levels, the “Landscape Quilting” workshop invites participants to explore raw-edge appliqué techniques a process that can be called fabric collage.  Workshop participants may select from six provided landscape photographs or bring their own as a reference for their quilt design.

Attendees will learn 

  •  Choosing which elements of your reference photo to highlight or simplify, based on your preferred level of abstraction
  • Building the background that anchors your landscape composition
  • Selecting fabrics for your design
  •  Using a fixative (such as Steam-a-Seam II) to assist with layout and layering
  •  Creating patterns for specific design components
  •  Applying design techniques to strengthen balance and visual flow
  •  Finalizing the overall layout and composition
  • Enhancing details or correcting mistakes with Sharpie markers
  •  Quilting the design to add texture and depth
  • Completing your piece with blocking and boarders

Registration is $50 for PPQG members, $100 for Gualala Arts members, and $150 for non-members.


About Margreth Barrett

Barrett, a former law professor turned textile artist, discovered her passion for quilted landscapes after retiring and relocating to Northern California. “I wasn’t clear what my medium should be until I saw a landscape quilt in a shop,” she said. “I knew immediately this would be my chosen mode of expression.” Barrett draws inspiration from artist Gloria Loughman and has exhibited award-winning quilts at Gualala Arts, her work can be found at the Discovery Gallery in Gualala.


Materials List

🧵 Fabric

  • Bring 2–3 large fabric pieces (up to ½ yard each), depending on your desired quilt size.
    • Suggestions: blue or gray for sky, brown or green for land, blue or turquoise for ocean
  • A selection of smaller fabric pieces in colors that suit your chosen landscape photo
  • Recommended: shades of green, brown, gray, black, and any other colors seen in your photo
  • Tip: Small prints often work better than solids; large prints may be more challenging to use

🧷 Fixative

  • Steam-A-Seam fabric fixative

✏️ Design Tools

  • Sketching paper and a pencil
  • Freezer paper for making patterns

🪡 Sewing Supplies

  • A sewing machine, along with any required tools and materials
  • One pair of large scissors and one pair of small, sharp scissors for detailed cutting

🔥 Pressing Tools

  • Teflon or other non-stick pressing sheet
  • Alternatively: bring iron cleaner and a rag to protect your iron from adhesive residue
