“I am very excited to be back at Gualala Arts Center. This time joining me is pianist Edward Simon, who I had a fabulous time playing with at Yoshi’s last year. We will draw from our respective backgrounds, growing up in Denmark and Venezuela.

I am bringing a Danish Folk Song arranged by Danish bass player Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, as well as a tune I wrote specifically for Gualala, entitled Coastal Explorations. Edward is bringing original Venezuelan music, as well as a tango by Piazzolla and a piece by the Brazilian multi instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti” – Mads Tolling

Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling and Venezuelan jazz pianist Edward Simon will perform at Gualala Arts on Saturday, June 28, at 4 p.m. as part of the Whale & Jazz Series.

The concert will showcase Tolling’s interpretations of traditional Danish works alongside Simon’s Venezuelan compositions, with both artists also performing familiar jazz standards.

Mads Tolling is a Grammy Award-winning violinist, formerly with Stanley Clarke and Turtle Island Quartet, and currently with Bob Weir & Wolf Bros. Today, Mads is performing with World-Class Venezuelan jazz pianist Edward Simon. Based in the SF Bay Area, as a member of the All-Star SFJAZZ Collective, Edward has been a Guggenheim Fellow and awarded multiple composition grants as part of Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works initiative. Both Mads and Edward are Yamaha Artists and have recorded 25 albums between them as a leaders and co-leaders.

Originating from Northern Europe and South America, Mads and Edward embark on a musical odyssey, finding the connections between the rich tapestries of jazz and the folkloric melodies of Latin America and Scandinavia. A few original compositions by the two will be on the set list as well.

Tickets are $25 in advance for general admission, increasing by $5 on the day of the event. For those interested in supporting the arts Sponsor tickets are available, priced at $100, offer select seating and are available online only.
