Omar Sosa: A Versatile Jazz Artist
Omar Sosa, a composer-pianist-bandleader, is one of the most versatile jazz artists today. His musical journey spans from Cuba to Africa, Brazil, Central America, and Ecuador’s African-descent communities, to San Francisco, New York, and his current home in Barcelona. True to his Afro-Cuban roots, Sosa creates a spirited vision of artistic generosity that embraces humanity at large. He has been nominated for seven GRAMMY awards and twice for the BBC World Music Awards. In 2003, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates for his contribution to Latin jazz in the United States.
Quarteto Americanos
Quarteto Americanos is Sosa’s first U.S.-based jazz ensemble since the 1990s. The group features drummer Josh Jones, bassist Ernesto Mazar Kindelán, and saxophone/clarinet/flute player Sheldon Brown. The ensemble came together in February 2021 during Sosa’s visit to the Bay Area for live streams. Reuniting with Josh and Sheldon was a gratifying experience for Sosa, as he had played extensively with them in the late 1990s. Josh is a versatile musician and educator, while Sheldon was a member of Sosa’s first Septet ensemble in the Bay Area. Ernesto Mazar Kindelán, a dynamic Cuban musician, joined the Bay Area in 2014 after a decade with Charanga Habanera, a celebrated Cuban timba band.
