Into Blue: Origins of Indigo Lecture
Indigo, the color of the sky and the sea, has a long and fascinating history that spans cultures and continents. It is also the subject of an upcoming lecture by artist Margaret Seelie at Gualala Arts on Friday, January 19 at 5 pm.
Seelie will share her insights and experiences with indigo dyeing, a natural process that creates vibrant shades of blue on fabric. She will also explore the cultural and spiritual significance of indigo, from its use in ancient Egypt to its role in Indigenous traditions.
Seelie is the founder of Seelie Studio, a natural dye house that specializes in indigo and shibori, a Japanese technique of folding and binding fabric to create patterns. She is also the creator of Seawitches, a zine for water people that celebrates the connection between humans and the ocean. Seelie’s work is inspired by nature, creativity, and community.
The lecture is $5 at the door and open to the public. It is part of the Gualala Arts Center’s ongoing series of events that aim to enrich the cultural life of the region. For more information, visit www.gualalaarts.org or call (707) 884-1138.
