Artist Margaret Seelie will share lessons from over a decade of indigo dyeing, including which fabrics dye best, how to make beautiful patterns using shibori binding techniques, and more. You’re welcome to bring your own items to dye or work with fabrics Margaret will bring. You’ll leave with a stack of beautifully dyed fabric and a memorable journey into blue.
About Margaret Seelie is an artist and writer based in the Bay Area. She founded Seelie Studio, a natural dye house, and Seawitches, a zine for water people. Course Information for Students
To get ready for our adventure into blue, here are a few tips:
Dress: Wear something you don’t mind getting dye on. Black clothes work well since you can’t see the dye or you can bring an oversized tee. Alternatively, I’ll have aprons you can borrow.
Materials: I will provide everything you’ll need including gloves and dyeable items like bandanas and goodies. You may want to bring a pen and paper to take notes.
BYO (optional): You are welcome to bring your own items to dye.
A few DO’S and DONT’S on types of fabric to bring:
DO Items made of natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk.
DON’T Items made of synthetic materials like plastics and polyester
DO White and light-colored items
DON’T Dark-colored items or pieces with heavy or abundant patterns
DO Smaller items that are around the size of a tee, bandana, or pillowcase
DON’T Large items like bedsheets, blankets, or curtains
Post-workshop: I will keep your dyed items so I can thoroughly rinse the dye out of them in my studio. Then, I’ll mail your items to the desired address.
