Beyond The Sea

The Bay Area Basket Makers (BABM) return to the Mendonoma Coast with “Beyond The Sea,” a new exhibit at the Dolphin Gallery. The opening is Saturday, August 12, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit continues through Sunday, October 1, 2023 with regular gallery hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Tuesday.

The new exhibit will consist primarily of baskets and other pieces of art using basket-making techniques showing the diversity of the art form. The art will range from very small baskets (one member can fit five of her miniatures in the palm of her hand) to pieces that are several feet tall.  Locals and visitors to the Mendonoma coast will appreciate the idea that many of BABM members use seaweed, abalone shells, pine needles and other natural elements that are so much a part of the northern California coastline.

Some members of the guild specialize in traditional basket making, some embrace structural / non-functional baskets and some are drawn to baskets that would be considered avant-garde. The guild’s work includes both wall-art and three dimensional work.

The exhibit will continue at the Dolphin Gallery through Sunday, October 1, 2023. The Dolphin Gallery is at 39140 Highway 1, Seacliff Center in Gualala. More information is available at 707,884.3896 and at GualalaArts.org/dolphin-gallery.
