An uplifting music event is set this month at Gualala Arts. The vocal group CoastSing, directed by Sue Bohlin, will present a concert celebrating Moms and Dads in the month of May with a song list most will recognize and be able to sing along with (or dance to!): Music from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, now called “Yacht Rock”.   The concert is set for Tuesday, May 16, 7:00 p.m. at Gualala Arts Center. Tickets for the May 16th show are $20 for adults, $5 more the day of, and children are free up to age 17. Tickets are available at Gualala Arts, Dolphin Gallery, and EventBrite.Com. (For anyone who can’t make it to the concert, an encore performance is scheduled for Sunday, May 21, 2:00 p.m. at the Point Arena Community Center at St. Paul’s. The concert in Point Arena is a free-will donation, and will also be a good one for the whole family.)

The concerts are titled “Tuesday Afternoon”/“Forever Afternoon” – after the popular song by the Moody Blues.  The opening solo will be sung by Diana Valero, one of the popular teachers in Point Arena.  “Sailing” by Christopher Cross will be featured as the poster song of the Yacht Rock genre.  The community chorus will be joined this time by Katrina Koffman from Manchester on flute,  and Kevin McCoy will add percussion, and stand up bass. Other soloists will be heard singing music by Lennon and McCartney, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and if we are lucky, some members of the Pt. Arena Wednesday Chorus will join the adults on three of the pieces they have been learning in the after school music program, including “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and “Come Saturday Morning”.

CoastSing is your coastal community choir that has existed for over 50 years. Its previous names were Coastal Singers, Hwy 1 Jazz Choir, and others.  Members are professional and amateur singers, some who read music, and others who don’t.  All are welcome to try it out.   Rehearsals are held Mondays at 4:30 at the Gualala Arts Center and the music selection encompasses a wide range of genres, including classical, folk, popular, and jazz.
