Each year, the Chamber Music Series at Gualala Arts brings a talented young musician from the Klein Competition to the coast for a concert. Violist Yuchen Lu is this year’s guest soloist, who will be accompanied by pianist Miles Grabor for a performance at Coleman Hall on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available at Gualala Arts, the Dolphin Gallery, and at EventBrite.com.  Mr. Yuchen Lu received the First Prize at the 2021 Irving M. Klein International String Competition. The history of these young, amazing musicians performing at Gualala Arts so early in their career is replete with many wonderful new faces of classical music. 

Yuchen Lu graduated from the Juilliard School with a Masters of Music in May 2022, where he studied with Carol Rodland, and now serves as a teaching assistant with Rodland’s studio. Previously, he studied at the New England Conservatory with Kim Kashkashian. Originally from AnHui in eastern China, Yuchen Lu went to a high school affiliated with Shanghai Conservatory of Music from 2010 to 2016, where he studied with Li Sheng. He has attended the Morningside Music Bridge summer festival, Bowdoin Music Festival, Yellow Barn and was a member of the Seiji Ozawa Orchestra Academy. During the summer of 2022 he completed a month in residence, performing at the Marlboro Music Festival. He made his California debut at Santa Cruz Symphony in October 2022, and the February 5 concert marks his first appearance for the Gualala Arts Chamber Music Series.

Collaborative pianist Miles Graber received his musical training at the Juilliard School, where he studied with Anne Hull, Phyllis Kreuter, Hugh Aitken, and Louise Behrend, and has developed a wide reputation as a superb accompanist and collaborative pianist for instrumentalists and vocalists. Among his many affiliations, he holds accompanying posts at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the San Domenico Conservatory.

The scheduled program for the February 5 Chamber Music event includes the “Cello Suite No. 6 in D major”, by Johann Sebastian Bach, the “Concert Piece for Viola and Piano” by George Enescu, the “Sonata for Solo Viola” by György Ligeti, “Sonata For Viola And Piano” by George Rochberg, and the “Viola Sonata in E-flat Major Op. 120 No. 2”  by Johannes Brahms.
