Founded in 1999, the MidtVest Pigekør challenges the dynamic between voice, body and concert space, and combines classical choir sound with choreography and performance. Those with a desire to become a part of the choir find that the road goes through multiple levels of performance and ability—the Beginners Choir, Childrens Choir and Junior Choir, rising to the Choir itself. In total, the four choirs consist of 130 girls and young women ages 5 to 22. All the singers receive vocal and ear training at the Jutland School of Singing in the central Danish city of Herning.
Audiences happily discover that the choir’s sound is seminally classical, but their repertoire includes music from various genres and with varying musical expressions. All of the girls display a high level of activity and enthusiasm. MidtVest Girls Choir rehearses twice a week, performs 20 to 25 concerts each year, works intensely on rehearsal weekends and choir camps, and at least once a year tours abroad. The choir frequently commissions and premieres new choral works, as well as recording CDs and music videos.
This return engagement as part of the Global Harmony series (the choir performed at Gualala Arts in 2012) will welcome 38 young women singers and their conductor for an encore performance of repertoire, from their home in Denmark and from around the world. More information at GualalaArts.org.
