Whimsical Fabric Faces
A new one-day workshop, “Whimsical Fabric Faces” is set for Gualala Arts in September. The class, featuring instructor Cheryl Nylund, will take place Thursday, September 15, 2022, and will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Attendees should plan on bringing a lunch. The cost for the workshop is $45 for Gualala Arts members, and $55 for non-members. Participants must register no later than September 2, 2022.
In “Whimsical Fabric Faces”, the class will learn how to put together a face for a pillow, wall hanging or framed art. They will learn how to use fabric scraps or salvage edges, to make hair, eyes, nose and mouths, and also learn how to use thread to enhance the face. (It works well with the Kaffe Fassett fabric collection as flowers for hair or with whimsical accents.) No art experience is needed to be a part of this workshop.
Cheryl Nylund has been sewing since she was 8 years old and says that she is a “Sewer and Fabraholic!” Nylund adds, “I also love the human face so the stars aligned when my sister gave me a book by “internationally recognized, award winning artist, author, and teacher” Freddy Moran. The book was making faces with fabric called ‘Face The Year!’. Then I scouted You tube for info on how to do this method. I found many ways to accomplish this and picked what I thought is the best method for Whimsical fabric faces that anyone can make.”

Materials Needed For Fabric Face Class
• 1 yard of seam lite2.
• 20 x 20 background fabric (I like to use black and white fabric) or something with only two colors.• 20 x 20 batting can Frankenstein to make a 20X20 piece.
• 20 x 20 piece to use as quilt backing (anything works if you are making a pillow, it won’t show.)
• ½ yard Fabric of choice for hair and clothing (I love Kaffe flower fabrics for hair.)
• 20 • 24 fabric for pillow backing
• 1 x 20 Velcro for pillow closure.
• Scraps of fabric for eyes, nose, mouth and eyebrows.
• Small to Medium sharp scissors (I love my medium Karen Buckley ones)
• Scissors to cut paper.
• 45 MM rotary cutter.
• Pencil, tweezers, safety pins, and many colors of threads for face details.
• Sewing machine with free motion foot.
Cheryl will provide face fabrics and glue sticks for participant in the class.
