The Awards
Two judges are viewing all of the art entered into this year’s Art in the Redwoods and their decisions will be made public on Friday evening, August 20 at 6 pm. Gualala Arts welcomes Sydney A. Cross and Armon Means as judges for this year’s Art in the Redwoods Fine Arts Exhibit. Both have a proven love of arts, and backgrounds that make them ideal for this year’s festival. Those planning on picking up their Boxed Hat Dinner are invited to preview all art entered before judging on Thursday, August 19 while waiting to pick up their dinner between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The decisions of the judges will be announced on Friday afternoon and available to see during the Champagne Preview Friday, also from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Sydney A. Cross, taught printmaking and art at Clemson University from 1981-2016 where she was awarded the title of Alumni Distinguished Professor of Art. After retiring from Clemson, she moved to Los Angeles and is currently a part time instructor at California State University, Northridge, CA. She also serves on LA Print Society Board and is a member of the California Society of Printmakers.
Armon Means is an artist who centers on ideas of cultural / minority identity and environmental influences. As he tells us, “I seek to create a unique connection between a passion for the art, culture, and most importantly the viewer. I realize without this, the end result of the work falls short. It is this connection to the viewer and audience that allows all artwork to go beyond a simple idea and become something that creates dialogue and thoughtful introspection.”
Vote For Your Favorite Art Entry!
Visitors to Gualala Arts can vote for their favorite entry (the Peoples Choice Award) in the 2021 Art in the Redwoods exhibit. However, while the art can be viewed online, voting must be done in person at Gualala Arts Center. Votes for the Peoples Choice may be dropped in the ‘ballot box’ in the foyer at Gualala Arts. Voting ends on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Stop by, view the art and vote for your favorite. Gualala Arts is closed on Monday, August 23, and will reopen to the public on Tuesday, August 24.

Sandy Ostrau Painting
Our featured artist Sandy Ostrau has donated a 30 x 30 inch original oil painting for one lucky Boxed Hat Dinner attendee! Each dinner guest will receive one raffle ticket! HUGE thanks Sandy!
Quilt Raffle
While at Art in the Redwoods, purchase one or more raffle tickets for the Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild (PPQG) raffle for a chance to win “Good Vibrations”. This year’s quilt was made by Dee Goodrich and Jan Carter, and quilted by Judy Riddle. The quilt measures 90” wide by 100” long. Winner need not be present to win.
Raffle Tickets are $5 each, 3 for $10, or 7 for $20 and are available at Gualala Arts. Buy one or more tickets while visiting Art in the Redwoods.
We welcome you back to our Redwood Grove in 2021 with a few safety protocols to keep in mind. First, we are switching to advance tickets required for all days to track and limit the amount of visitors, we are limiting the number of vendor booths, artists, and volunteers as well. Masking is required for everyone indoors and outside when gathering to watch entertainment and when distancing is not possible. There are several hand washing and sanitation stations scattered throughout the grounds. We have installed several air scrubbers/purifiers throughout the galleries, and the doors and windows will remain open to let the healing Pacific breezes in. Please dress in layers to adapt to the ever-changing environment.
