Each year Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild members are “challenged” to create a quilt that fits certain parameters.
The 2020 Challenge is “A Star is Born.” Although no specific style nor size is required, each entry must include, one “pieced star.
A pieced star can be any star design in any size and the quilt design can have the minimum one star or many stars as long as they are pieced.
Inspiration can come from absolutely anywhere or anything. Members are challenged to apply the Challenge rules to stitch and/or quilt their own interpretation in fabric in one, two or three dimensions.
Quilts to be exhibited include traditional, modern & art quilts, clothing, and a variety of styles & techniques.
The show is not juried nor judged, so it encourages creativity at all levels.
It is always a great thrill to see someone new to quilting/art quilts show their work alongside long-time quilters.
2020 Challenge Rules:
There is no size, fabric, color or design limitations for an exhibit quilt but, each completed exhibit quilt must have at least one “pieced” star of any size or design on the front side of the quilt.
- A minimum of one “pieced” star must be included in the quilt design – the star can be any star design as long as it is pieced and on the front of the quilt.
- No maximum or minimum sizes for either the quilt or the “pieced” star.
- The quilt design does not have to be limited to one star. There can be any number of “pieced” stars making up the quilt design.
- There are no limitations as to how you piece a star as long as it is pieced.
- Fabrics are of the designers choice.
- Piecing techniques are of the designers choice.
- “Pieced” stars can be sewn into the quilt as part of a block or full quilt design, appliqued, glued, fused or otherwise applied to the quilt as long as the star is pieced.
Examples of pieced stars but not limited to: Friendship star, Ohio Star, Mariner’s star, Feathered star, Freestyle star – ANY “PIECED” STAR PATTERN.
About the Pacific Piecemaker’s Quilt
The goal of Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild is to promote quilting along the Sonoma/Mendocino coast. PPQG offers monthly educational programs, lectures, and workshops for quilters of all skill levels as well as opportunities for members to give back to their community using those skills.
Monthly meetings feature programs to inspire quilters in all aspects of quilting ranging from traditional to contemporary art quilt techniques and development of textile and wearable art. Lectures and workshops are presented by world famous quilters as well as our local talent. PPQG also coordinates several quilt shows and quilt challenges in the community.
“Comfort quilts” are made by members and distributed to a variety of local assistance organizations as a means of service back to our community. Additionally, PPQG makes a quilt to be raffled at Art in the Redwoods as a fund raiser for the Gualala Arts Scholarship Fund.
Regular meetings are held on the third Friday of the month at 12:30 PM at Gualala Arts. Meetings are open to anyone who enjoys quilts or quilting or who would like to learn more. Newcomers and visitors are always welcome; there is a $5 charge for non-members. New members can join at any time for a $40 per year membership fee (prorated August through December.)
