The fourteenth annual Gualala Arts Creative Writing Contest offers $ 1,000 in prize money provided by The Sea Ranch Foundation and Gualala Rotary Club who have jointly sponsored the event since its inception in 2003 when Rotarian RC Vasavada created the competition to encourage local writers who have not published previously.
Each contestant may enter one manuscript of up to 1,500 words in this year’s category of “Short Story,” that is a brief piece of prose fiction. Entries will be judged on quality of character and plot development, literary style, mechanics, originality and overall effect.
Entry forms are available at the art center web site, www.gualalaarts.org, and at the Gualala Arts Center office, at Dolphin Gallery in Gualala and at the Coast Community Library in Point Arena. First Prize of $250, Second Prize of $150, and Third Prize of $100 will be awarded in both Adult and Youth (18 and younger) Divisions. There is no entry fee.
All full or part-time coastal residents from Elk to Timber Cove who have not previously had a short story published in a book or periodical with the exception of school publications are eligible. Previous contest winners in this genre are also not eligible.
Entries must be received at the Gualala Arts Center in person, via email at info@gualalaarts.org, or by mail at P.O. Box 244, Gualala, CA 95445 before the submission deadline of Friday, April 28 at 4 pm Contest sponsors invite participants and the public to attend the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 16 at 7 pm at the Gualala Arts Center.
