58th Annual Art in the Redwoods

The 2019 Art in the Redwoods Festival takes place August 15-18, engulfing the grounds of the Gualala Arts Center, a 15,000-square-foot performing arts architectural gem nestled in the coastal redwoods and home to the festival since its opening in 1998.

The festival features a host of events and activities, attracting vendors and artists from throughout Northern California along with hundreds of visitors, both local and from afar.

At the heart of the festival is the Fine Arts Exhibit, with more than 300 art entries. It takes two weeks of preparation to hang and place all the items, which are judged the night of the Champagne Preview on Thursday evening.

Judging the art work this year are friends and colleagues Nikki Vismara and Silvia Paret.   Vismara  is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and completed a Master’s Degree specializing in Paleolithic Art at the Université Lumière in Lyon, France. Vismara lived in France for nearly a decade and currently works  full time as an  interdisciplinary painter at Hunter’s Point Shipyard in San Francisco. She has been a featured artist at Saks Fifth Avenue & Neiman Marcus and currently serves on Artspan’s Open Studio Committee and oversees the Fall Art Bike Tour.   Paret is noted to be knowledgeable about art history, modern and contemporary art, design, literature, foreign films.  She attended medical school and includes science, physics and biology into her vast knowledge base.  She has also lived and traveled around the world and is fluent in at least four languages.

Art is judged and awarded in 16 categories, and more than $5,000 is awarded in prize money.  Awards include Best of Show, Best Local Work, Most Popular, Judges Awards, Redwood Coast Land Conservancy, Friends of the Gualala River, Mendonoma Sightings, Beading Excellence, Emerging Artist (best work under age 18), and First through Third prizes in all categories: Oil & Acrylics, etc; Water Media; Prints & Graphics; Sculpture; Monochromatic Photography; Color Photography; Digital Art; Pastels & Drawings; Woodworking; Glass; Jewelry & Ornamentation; Clay & Mosaic; Fibers, Textiles & Soft Sculpture; Quilts; Collage, Mixed Media & 2-D Assemblage; and Weaving. The public’s first opportunity to view and purchase art is at the Hats Off Dinner. This signature fundraising is Gualala Arts’ largest fundraiser of the year.

This year, the Hats Off Dinner kicks off the festival on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m. with a Magic Happens!  theme — it is a “must attend” gala evening that truly encompasses the spirit and creativity of the Gualala Arts community. The Hats Off Dinner $150 ticket includes a VIP festival entry to all Art in the Redwoods events, and a sneak preview and first purchase option of the Fine Art Exhibit that fills the Arts Center with more than 300 pieces of art. The cost includes a tax-deductible donation letter of $100. More information below.

The Champagne Preview, Friday, Aug. 16, 4 to 6 p.m., offers the public its first chance to view the festival’s winning entries, another opportunity to purchase art before the general public, and a front-row seat for the judges’ critiques and awards ceremony at 6:15 p.m. in Coleman Hall. Entry is $10 at the door.

The full Art in the Redwoods Festival hits its stride Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17 and 18, opening at 10 a.m., with 30-plus vendor booths, community and interest groups, live music, storytelling, great local food and drink, and fun activities for all ages. Entry is $6 per person at the gate, youth 7-17 are free with a paying adult.

The continuing success and proceeds generated from the Art in the Redwoods Festival help Gualala Arts fulfill its mission to promote public interest and participation in the arts. The Arts Center presents over 100 publicized events, such as concerts, fundraisers, live theater and festivals, and close to 2,000 calendared events, workshops, lectures, classes, and other activities throughout the year.

The Hats Off Dinner • Thursday, August 15 at 6 pm.

A special evening of fine food and fun entertainment, the Hats Off Dinner is a gala evening that kicks off Art in the Redwoods on Thursday, Aug. 15, starting at 6:00 p.m. This year’s theme is Magic Happens! Guests are invited to dress like a star or come as they are!

This year’s menu is designed around short ribs, Moroccan chicken and a shrimp boil with mushroom risotto cakes and roasted veggies as tempting side dishes.

The Russian House will serve Pirozhki which are small traditional Russian baked pies made from yeast dough and stuffed with a variety of fillings.

Other coast restaurants contributing to this year’s locally sourced feast include Oz Farm and Fisherman, Bob Jacobs.   A first this year will be an Ahi Tuna tent. An annual favorite returns:  gourmet wood-fired pizza prepared by the Gualala Arts Friends of the Pizza Oven and volunteers  Karl Danskin and Melinda Mills.

Wines generously donated by Woodenhead Wines will complement the dishes, and the Gualala Arts Culinary Arts Guild will provide appetizers and a no-host martini bar. This year Woodenhead brings something new to delight dinner guests:  three types of Bubbling Wine to experience at their tasting station.  To encourage mingling  among  the guests, the Hats Off evening continues to be a more casual affair of indoor food stations on the Metcalf Terrace, around the Grenwelge Kitchen and in the Redwood Grove.  However, guests are invited to dress as formally or informally as they like, according to how they wish to experience the evening.

Haven’t reserved yet? Tickets to the Hats Off Dinner are by reservation only and are $150 per person which includes a $100 donation letter. Dinner attendees also receive a VIP Festival Entry to the Champagne Preview on Friday, Aug. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m., and the Festival itself on Saturday or Sunday, Aug. 17 and 18.
