This workshop is for people who would like to learn how to make proper exposures (either film or digital) after dark, both by the light of the moon and by existing artificial light.

Upon completing this workshop, students should be comfortable photographing in a wide variety of lighting situations, from relatively short exposures illuminated by ambient or industrial light and streetlight, to longer exposures of ten minutes or more. Emphasis will be on evaluating existing lighting situations and exposing accordingly; using supplemental lighting as needed. Films and digital capture will be discussed and compared. This is an intensive workshop, and participants will be closely supervised on location.
Origination point for the workshop is Gualala Arts Center where we meet for brief lectures, before our field work. Photo locations for this workshop will include various locations along the Mendocino-Sonoma coast. The only prerequisite is that students know how to use their specific cameras (with full manual control and locking cable release), and have a firm grasp of the basic concepts of photography.
As an adjunct to coursework created in the workshop (plus any follow-up nightwork done by attendees), all are encouraged to submit a selection of finished images to
A Little Night Music,
a juried exhibit of Night Photography at the Burnett Gallery, Gualala Arts Center, October 5-28, 2012. Deadline for submissions is Friday July 6, 2012 - see the
registration form
for details.
"My approach to teaching night photography, while using current digital equipment to its full advantage, is decidedly low-tech. I believe it is best practice to get it all (or as much as is possible) done 'in-camera' - keeping the post processing at a minimum."
- Tim Baskerville
