Sashiko is a Japanese embroidery technique, traditionally done on indigo cotton with a heavy weight white thread. The pattern designs can range from very geometric to free form. This class will present the basics of the form, including suggestions for including sashiko as a design element in quilts. It can also be used in pillow covers, little purses, vests, etc. This is all done by hand, so no sewing machine is required. A kit, including the fabric, sashiko thread and needles and materials to transfer the design will be available from the instructor for $10. The class will be small, so individual instruction will be available. Mary Austin has travelled extensively in Japan and taken courses in sashiko while there and has included it in many of her quilts.
