Auditions for Art Center Theater's summer play, The Cemetery Club by Ivan Menchell, are open to anyone interested in playing a role in the production. There are roles for four women and one man, all ages 50 and up. The play is being directed by Kathye Hitt, Art Center Theater cofounder.
The play is the story of three longtime friends, Ida, Lucille, and Doris, all widows, who form a monthly "cemetery club" to have tea and visit their dead husbands' graves. The three women have very different approaches to life after their husbands' passing.
Very set in her ways, Doris can't let go and refuses to live a life that does not include her late husband. Flamboyant Lucille, Doris' complete opposite, seems to be trying to make up for the flawed relationship she had with her husband by chasing as many men as possible. Ida is the most balanced of the three. She is slowly getting over her loss and is determined to start embracing life once again. She starts dating Sam, her butcher, who is a widower himself. Doris and Lucille don't like Ida's new take on life, and the conflict that arises from their reluctance to allow her change fuels both the humor and the pathos in the play. Rounding out the cast is Mildred, one of Sam's dates.
Rehearsals will begin June 3rd. Both afternoon and evening rehearsals are possible. No experience is necessary to audition. To request a perusal script, please contact Kathye at
