The Art of the Bouquet
Friday, March 30, 2007
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
at the Gualala Arts Center
Gualala Arts Garden Guild presents The Art of the Bouquet, a how-to floral demonstration featuring author, lecturer, Marsha Heckman. This early spring garden event will include a champagne luncheon and spring fashion show by The Cotton Field clothing store of Gualala. The event will be held Friday, March 30, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Candace Moore, a vivacious, long-time coastal resident will be the mistress of ceremonies for this gala. Candace will kick off the event by introducing Marsha Heckman, well known Marin floral designer and author. Marsha will captivate the audience by creating six floral arrangements utilizing traditional blooms and plant materials available in the springtime on the North Coast as well as branches and bulbs from the garden and commercial cut flowers. Marsha will provide plenty of inspiration and information to help you to create your own unique designs!
Marsha's style is not "floristy" or grand but easy to do at home with your own containers and tools. She will demonstrate several arrangements for us while teaching the basic techniques for preparing and preserving the bouquet yourself. (The arrangements will be raffled at the luncheon). Marsha is a fun and informative instructor who gives us lots of stories about the meaning and fascinating lore of flowers. Best of all she makes the audience feel confident to do imaginative creative floral designs. Following the luncheon she will be available to sign copies of her books.
Candace will offer commentary on the latest spring fashions worn by local models featuring clothing in a variety of fibers, wonderful jewelry and one of a kind "wearable arts" at affordable prices from The Cotton Field. The Cotton Field, celebrating its ninth year in Gualala, is owned by partners, Peggy Sundstrom, Barbara Kraft and Lou Anne Fredrickson, a real family affair.
Spring fashions at The New York Fashion Week 2007 were exhilarating. Lou Anne, called last spring's fashions "bits and pieces" because she generally wasn't too jazzed about much of the offerings. However, this season could be called "The Whole Shebang." There were some collections that she absolutely loved, loved, loved! The buying focus for The Cotton Field from the fashion world is to include a coastal look. Lou Anne and Barbara just returned from the San Francisco January market which they said showed a lot of seersucker in trousers and jackets. Some of the lines featured at The Cotton Field, with the coast in mind, are Sangam; artsy, upscale textured cotton. Color Me Cotton and Click Linens; Ezze Wear and By Taylor for jackets, pants tops, women's novelty cotton and sportswear; Sterling Styles, casual and special occasion clothing, hand bags and scarves; Peanut Butter and Jelly, sports wear; Parsley and Sage;
Neon Buddha, clothing for travel, yoga pants and more; Avalin, one size, easy care, 100% cotton year-round sweaters.
You will enjoy the fashion show as you dine on a luscious luncheon with dessert, while sipping mimosas. The mimosas will be served by a few of our handsome coastal gentlemen.
Win a prize by fashioning an original floral or humorous chapeau. Also win a raffle prize which includes Marsha's floral arrangements, table top decor and a special Easter wheelbarrow overflowing with live plants and Easter décor.
Easter center pieces, raffle baskets and living garden décor will fill the auditorium with spring. Be part of the "show" by fashioning an Easter Bonnet. Yours might win the prize for the silliest or the most exquisite hat.
