Open Studio in Ceramics
Gualala Arts open clay studio is a gathering place for artists and craftsmen to network in a creative and encouraging atmosphere.
We have materials and equipment for hand building, slip casting and wheel throwing with an open-to-the-redwoods studio, located downstairs in Gualala Arts Center. We fire both low fire (cone 06-04) and high fire (mid-range cone 5-6).
Beginners through advanced students are welcome. The studio is staffed by volunteer instructors Monday and Wednesday 10 am to 4 pm. Children (with or without adults) are welcome in the studio whenever volunteer instructors are present. Adults, after they have signed up and met with one of the studio volunteers to learn about the studio and studio procedures, are welcome to work in the studio any time the Gualala Arts Center is open. (Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 pm).
Please join us to contribute your interests and talents in this excellent facility. We hope you learn more about ceramics and enjoy the company of other artists.
Clay is sold by the 25 pound bag. The cost includes $10 to Gualala Arts for firing. We have a large selection of low fire glazes (06-04) and a very limited selection of high fire (5-6) glazes for free. We have a limited selection of high fire (5-6) glazes for sale and we accept commercial glazes purchased from Creative Ceramics in Santa Rosa and other retail suppliers of ceramic glazes.
WE DO NOT ALLOW LEAD BASED GLAZES IN THE STUDIO for safety and regulatory reasons.
Clay is available for purchase, and the price includes $10 that goes to Gualala Arts and covers firing of your pieces. Glazes are available from $4 to $11 for an 8 ounce jar, and the studio requests that you use its glazes.
The Gualala Clay Studio is always looking for Volunteer Instructors. The more volunteer instructors we have, the more days we can be staffed and open for children. To be a Volunteer Instructor, you must be willing to volunteer one day a week. Volunteer Instructors receive free studio time. You must have some skill/experience working with clay and ceramics. You must also work and play well with others, particularly children. If you are interested talk to Doric Jemison-Ball [Wednesday] or Jane Head [Monday], our current Volunteer Instructors.
The Clay Studio participates in the yearly Gualala Arts Summer Art Program for Youth. Students aged 12 through 17 are invited to use the Clay Studio at no charge after school on Wednesdays from 1:30 pm. to 4 pm.
The popular clay studio offers children the opportunity to learn and express their creativity using the marvelous media of clay. During the first week, the children build their clay projects, followed in the second week by painting their artwork, using ceramic glazes or non-fired acrylics.
There are numerous projects for children to tackle, such as bowls and/or mugs, magnets, balloon sculptures, picture frames, tiles, wind chimes and self-portraits. Older children have the additional option of creating a clock (clock works provided) and/or a bird house. Both groups also have time to use their imaginations and pursue their own individual projects.
