Doric T. Jemison-Ball II - Ceramics, Mixed Media Sculpture, Acrylics

Studio Discovery Tour artist Doric Jemison-Ball: Green Lipped Jug T.S. Eliot once said something to the effect that it's not particularly useful to ask an author for an interpretation of his own work, because after a point he becomes just another reader of it.

I've always felt that artists, regardless of media, do themselves a disservice when they talk about their work, particularly if they feel the necessity to explain it. If what the artist was trying to get across is not obvious to the audience, either the artist has failed, or it is time for a critic to explain what the artist wasn't aware they were trying to convey. In any case, it isn't likely that the artist will do better explaining what he or she was trying to convey in their work better than the work itself.

The best I can offer is the following: In the winter, when it is dark and dreary, and too cold for the Hungarian Gypsies who still travel in horse drawn wagons to go out and sell their tin pots, or con the Gadjos into new roofs and driveways or bodywork for their cars; they decorate their wagons with bright colors and intricate designs. As winter comes to an end and the sun grows brighter and stronger, the trees take on leaves and the flowers bloom, here come the Gypsies in their wild and wonderful carts, ready for spring, bringing a smile to the faces of all who see them.

I work primarily in three dimensional media, mainly ceramics and sculpture, but occasionally indulge myself with overly intellectual paintings and drawings with visual footnotes.
