Without music, life would be a mistake
Register by:   January 9, 2014
Tuition:   $80 members; $95 non-members

For people who would like to discuss music brilliantly at dinner parties, offer a knowledgeable review after a concert, or listen to music in new ways... this class will enrich your understanding of music from the inside out. Topics covered will include:

  • Elements of Music - What are they? How do the elements work together to create the powerful pull of music for the human brain?

  • A Brief History of Music - How have the elements of music been used by different composers in different times? What is the relationship between the history of an era and its music?

  • In Music, Formal is Normal - How do composers use patterns to organize the elements of music? How do these formal structures help us comprehend music?

  • A World of Music - How are the elements of music used in non-western music? How is music a "window" in to other cultures?

Participants will also be given links to on-line resources to explore topics more deeply between sessions.

Disclaimer: The instructor is passionate about this subject, believes everyone is a musician, and loves to engage people in the process of learning about music... but will not pretend to be qualified to include the vast topics of pop, rock, rap, hip-hop, ska, reggae, metal, grunge, or other non-"classical" music in the content of this workshop; there might, however, be just a hint of jazz.

About the instructor

Marjie Van Gunten retired after teaching music to adults and children for 40 years. She taught at Foothill and DeAnza Colleges in addition to teaching children from middle school up through early childhood in Bay Area schools. She still teaches adults through professional development training for public schools, presents workshops nationally, and sings locally with the Mendonoma Chamber Chorus and Mendocino Music Festival Chorus.
