The Diary of Anne Frank On July 6 1942, a Jewish family living in Amsterdam - Otto and Edith Frank and their daughters, Margot, 15 and Anne, 13 - go into hiding from the Nazis in a secret annex. They are joined by the van Daans and Mr. Dussel. Anne, who turned 13 in June, records their lives in her diary. Through her words we share the coming of age of this remarkable girl. We enter a world of pettiness and magnanimity, strife and celebration, fear of discovery and everyday joys.

The Diary of Anne Frank The playwrights, Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, writing and romantic partners for more than 50 years, collaborated on such screenplays as "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." In 1955, they adapted "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl," a first person account of life in hiding. For their efforts they won two Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize. Their dramatization was tailored for an American Gentile audience and deliberately rendered "universal" rather than specifically Jewish and Holocaust related.

In 1997 Wendy Kesselman adapted "The Diary of Anne Frank" (winning a Tony for best revival), rethinking and retelling Anne's story. By using portions of the diary that had been excluded from the 1952 publication, this new version of the play reflects a greatly increased awareness of the specific context, both historical and human. Anne's story is a lesson for the ages - the life and beauty of one young girl's thoughts, hopes and dreams has served the world!
