Soundwaves: The Art of Sampling

with Stephanie Hanor
Thursday, May 5, 2011, 7:00 p.m.
Admission is $5

Stephanie Hanor Gualala Arts will present a lecture by Dr. Stephanie Hanor, Director of Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, California, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 5. Dr. Hanor is the juror for The May Show exhibit opening on Friday, May 6.

Sound has played a significant role in the development of modern and contemporary art, from the visual references of Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian in the early twentieth-century to the aural experimentations of Nam June Paik and John Cage in the 1950s and 1960s. The lecture Soundwaves: The Art of Sampling will focus on contemporary manifestations of the conjunction of art and sound, examining the work of artists who appropriate the musical process of sampling in their work, either through the incorporation of found sound or through visual and material references to sound.

This talk will look at how this interest has manifested into contemporary artistic strategies that borrow, recycle, appropriate, and fuse diverse snippets of music, film, popular culture, and history to create new connotations and experiences. Exploring the relationship between sound and vision, this talk will show how contemporary artists are crossing genre and media in their exploration of sight, sound, and the translation of the audible into the visual.

Dr. Hanor graduated from Tulane University, received an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a PhD. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin.

Ms. Hanor began her career as Assistant Curator of American and Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin and, prior to coming to Mills College, was the Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego.

She has organized numerous exhibitions by a number of emerging as well as internationally known artists. At San Diego, she curated a major traveling exhibition devoted to contemporary Latin American and Latino art. Her scholarly interests include exploring the relationship of sound and vision.

Ms. Hanor's lecture is the second Hardy Lecture on the Visual Arts, which takes place in conjunction with The May Show. It is supported in part by a donation given to Gualala Arts by Judy and Russ Hardy.
