Gualala Arts Auto Show Gualala Arts Auto Show

Located on the beautifully landscaped grounds of the Gualala Arts Center, this is a car show you can actually stroll through, talk to the owners and appreciate each car, truck or motorcycle for the piece of art it is.

Best of Show in 2011 was Dave Sambad with his immaculate 1955 Chevy Bel-Air the new coveted Terrace Award went to Harry Hardin's stunning 1928 Ford Sedan hot rod.

There are eleven classes plus display only; entries include the oldies, the very creative and some great new models you might not have seen. There is even a prize for longest distance traveled as people come from all over California to enjoy the sparkling ocean drive set off by the mystery of the redwood forests. This auto show was extremely well received last year and once again street rod buffs will fill Highway 1 for the run to Gualala. The event promises to become a permanent "happening."

This free admission show opens at 10:00 a.m. for the public and closes at 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided for purchase on the grounds from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Beverages (wine, beer, soft) are available all day. The awards ceremony is at 3:30 p.m. There is a People's Choice award, so come prepared to cheer your choice.

Pinewood Derby

The 2nd annual Gualala Arts Pinewood Derby boasted a new track, a new timing system and new race schedule with a record breaking 53 entries in four categories. A total of 58 races across all categories plus the Grand Finale were used to determine the overall winner.

As part of the Gualala Arts Summer Art Program for Youth, several of the racers built their cars with the assistance of Mark Haveman, owner of the Gualala Joinery. Some of the participants helped test the new track and its timing system in the week leading up to the big event.

The all-new four lane aluminum track was purchased using donations from several Gualala businesses and racing fans. It proved to be a big draw for race car builders both young and old. The track, which included an electronic timing system that displayed immediate finishing order, race times and scale miles per hour (SMPH) for each race, was paid for through the fundraising efforts of Mike "Bone Daddy" Thomas of Bones Roadhouse. The new racing format had every entrant running a race in each lane of the track, with all racers being able to cheer for their cars for at least four races. An average taken of all four runs was used to determine the overall winner in each class. Sponsored by Coasting Home, the final results saw trophies being awarded for 12 and under, 13 to 18 years, 19 plus years, Historic and Overall Winner categories.

Bone Daddy's Hi Boy Roadster set the overall Track Record on Saturday, with a run of 2.6009 at 190.1 SMPH during the 19 plus years category round, but was unable to duplicate that time in the Grand Finale round. Alan Ricioli of Waterman Racing took first place in the 19 plus category, with an average time of 2.6308 with SMPH 187.9. Julia Almind had taken first place in the 13 to 18 years category, with an average time of 2.8525 with SMPH of 173.4. Last year's 12 and under category and Overall Winner, Zidane Koller, used last year's car and two newly built cars to take the 12 and under and Historic classes, as well as the top three spots in the final.
