The January 2013 exhibit at the Dolphin Gallery features Elk ceramicist Sophia Sutherland and examples of the work done by the Gualala Arts Life Drawing Group.

Ms. Sutherland has been featured by the gallery previously, however this will be a first time showing for the Life Drawing Group. The opening night reception is on Saturday, January 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and the show runs through Wednesday, January 30.

Sophia Sutherland, figure sculpture Sophia Sutherland has a love of working with clay as her work will illustrate. She plans to exhibit a wide range of torsos in different sizes and shapes using a range of clay materials with a variety of pattern surfaces. She will reserve some space to display some of her overtly whimsical and covertly philosophical pieces from some of her past exhibits.

Her ceramic felines will also be on display, one of which can be seen at the Artist Collective of Elk Gallery. Founded in 2007, the Artist Collective of Elk is a group of thirty-two artists located along the Mendonoma Coast from Fort Bragg to Sea Ranch whose work is displayed yearlong in the gallery. The group strives to create original art at affordable prices.

A resident of Elk since 1968 Sutherland has used a variety of firing techniques. Although preferring high fire reduction techniques she is currently expanding her firings to include such methods as pit, raku and oxidation firings to create the desired effects on her glazes. Her formal training began at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.

Every Wednesday a group of interested artists gather at Gualala Arts to work independently on drawing the human figure. Since each artist chooses his or her preferred medium, the drawings may be in graphite, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, acrylic or oil. This exhibit will give the public an opportunity to see the results of their efforts.
