In their first show as a dynamic duo, Jan and Hal Fogel (mixed media) decorate the Dolphin Gallery through the month of April.  Toast the artists on Saturday, April 3 from 5-7 p.m., and treat yourself to gratis wine and hors dâouevres.  There is no charge for admission.  The exhibit continues through April 28.

A former MacramŽ shop and clothing design business owner and operator, Janâs interest in ãfiber artsä began at an early age with sewing and is rooted in family.  ãI have always felt the need to be creative and I believe that comes from being from a family of creative people.ä Her work today is a product of these interests combined with her experience in painting in a ãhighly stylized folk art manner.ä

Using watercolor paper, Jan focuses on adding texture and translucency, often achieved by applying glassine and other mediums.  Paint accentuates the piece and is multilayered and morphed to sculpt each creation.

Jan has been recognized for her artistry at the 2002 Art in the Redwoods, snagging a ribbon in the mixed media category.  Her work has also been shown at Point Arena City Arts as well as Gualala Arts Center.

A graduate of Arizona State University, Hal Fogel has been practicing photography for over thirty years.  Through the seventies, he furthered his studies in this art through additional college courses and later attended, amongst others, a workshop by Frederick Sommer.  He soon became involved with ãa commercial/ portraiture/fine art business that was active from 1979- 1999.ä

Today, Hal is painting with acrylic and oils on different canvases or gesso, later applying varnish to each design.  Various tools are used to manipulate these pieces, whether it is a fork, comb, brush, etc. or the addition of wire. Halâs work is often motivated by photographs and is enriched through years of artistic fervor.  ãMy work is imbued with an art-historical spirit of creation and imagination combined with an intense love of looking.ä

A former photography teacher at Phoenix College, Hal is a recipient of the 2002 Art in the Redwoods 1st Place in Black/White Photography and has exhibited his work in over forty shows.
