Acting Class Recital

Tuesday, May 30, 7:00 p.m.
Coleman Auditorium
Gualala Arts Center

As you probably are aware, theater is alive and flourishing at Gualala Arts. Each year, Arts Center Theater presents the best of local talent in a variety of musical and dramatic performances. New actors continually join our merry band of players onstage. Have you ever wondered where this influx of talent learns the art of acting? Have you ever thought that you would like to act as well, but you don't know where to begin? Well, you could take a beginning acting class taught at Gualala Arts through SRJC. And, if you wanted to find out more about what that would teach you, you could come to the Art Center on May 30.

Kathye Hitt This spring's adult Beginning Acting Class at Gualala Arts will offer a public recital on Tuesday, May 30 at 7:00 pm in the GAC auditorium. This class, taught annually by Art Center Theater co-producer and director Kathye Hitt through Santa Rosa Junior College's local outreach program, leads novice and experienced actors through the art and science of developing and creating a character onstage. Over a 16 week period, the students explore the craft of acting through a variety of exercises, improvisations, and explorations designed to inspire their creative spirit and heighten their understanding and re-creation of human emotions and reactions. Students in this spring's class are veteran actors Paddy Batchelder, Savannah Power, Marlee Little, Jane Simmonds, Sherry Pringle, and Joel Crockett as well as stage newcomers Rob Elder, Karel Metcalf, Dolora Westrich, Jinx McCombs, and Pam Nelson.

In addition to in-class activities, each student prepares a monologue and a duet scene from a modern stage play. These mini-productions are memorized, staged, and rehearsed by the students outside of class and then presented to the class. This year's presentations range from Tennessee Williams to William Saroyan and from the basest comedies to the height of drama. A variety of these scenes and duets will be presented to the public in the May 30 recital.

So, if you are interested in finding out more about acting for yourself, or in watching and supporting new actors in our area, please join us in the GAC auditorium at 7:00 pm on Tuesday May 30. There is no admission fee, but contributions to Gualala Arts to defray costs of production will be gratefully accepted.

Hope to see you there!
