Volunteers at Gualala Arts
Annie Brayer

Annie Brayer

Anyone who has joined Annie Brayer on the Tuesday Hikes for Health knows she is a very active woman. Her most recent project was organizing a special Dinner of Appreciation at Gualala Arts Center on February 2, 2006 that honored patron and life members, but she has been busy with many adventures her entire life.

Since moving to the area full time about four and a half years age, Annie has served as membership chair of both the Gualala Arts Center and the Community Center. She heads up the Tuesday Hikes for Health with friends Loretta Healy and Marcia Hayworth, and teaches yoga at the Del Mar Center. For three years she served as a board member and transportation coordinator for Community Resources Connection.

Her travels have extended far beyond the circumambulation of Sea Ranch, an activity which she has completed three times. Annie grew up in Marin County. As an adult parent she worked her way through college seeking a teaching credential and a Masters Degree. Hired as an associate professor at the University of Southern California she went on assignment to Iran to train Iranian media personnel in English so they could establish educational T.V. in remote villages as part of the Shah's modernization program.

After two years there, she worked for the American government teaching fellowship training teachers in the Dominican Republic. Then, she returned to teach English at the College of Marin for eight years. She had an interesting avocation acting as a foster mom for dogs undergoing a career change, a euphemism for those dogs at the San Rafael Guide Dogs for the Blind training center who failed to complete the training. Before retiring she spent two years fund raising for the American Cancer Society while she was a closet smoker herself. She hasn't lit up in eighteen years.

Annie is married to Mike Brayer, a familiar face at both the Lions Club and Pay-and Take. They have owned a home on Sea Ranch since 1998. She has one son and two grandchildren. Her guiding principle is that chronology doesn't matter as long as you complete all the goals you set for yourself. Annie has a long list of goals and she continues to work diligently at completing that list.
