Young Artists Scholarships

Gualala Arts accepts applications for Young Artists Scholarships each year. Applicants must be graduating seniors living in the South Coast area between Fort Ross and Elk who are committed to further studies in an appropriate school and a possible career in an artistic field. Since its inception in 2000, thirty eight students have received grants totaling $40,550.

Committee chairperson Chester Case stresses that the term "art" is broadly defined and can include drama, dance, film writing, computer graphics, and other appropriate fields. Past winners have studied fashion design, photography, theater arts, dance, clay art, drawing, painting and film.

The scholarships are awarded for two or three consecutive academic terms, commencing with the term following graduation. They are payable in two equal installments, the amount of which may vary according to individual needs and number of qualified applicants.

Interested students may obtain a scholarship application from their high school counselor. Home-schooled students may call the Gualala Arts office at 884-1138 for application information. The 2010 Scholarship Application instructions are now available for download. Deadline for applications is in early spring. Check the application form for the deadline.

The committee wants clear evidence of a strong commitment to art and will notify finalists of the interview process before the winners are announced. This program is part of Gualala Arts' mission to promote public interest and participation in the arts.
