Eric Mintel Quartet

Whale & Jazz Festival logoThis year’s Festival is proud to present The Eric Mintel Quartet from Pennsylvania, performing revered Dave Brubeck compositions. Composer and pianist Mintel, whose quartet has performed for both President Clinton and President Obama at the White House, virtually duplicates Brubeck’s virtuosic, compelling and easily identifiable piano style. He communicates beautifully with his audiences and has also performed over 10 concerts at the Washington D.C. Kennedy Center.

In 2009, Dave Brubeck himself said about Mintel’s Quartet that “it was a surprise and an honor to hear how well you and the other members… play my music… Hearing your new interpretations was a beautiful experience.”

Dave Brubeck

Mintel will present the world premiere of his brand new piece, “To Dave with Gratitude,” written especially for the Festival’s Main Event concert! This year’s Festival Youth Discovery, 17 year old drummer Matt Stoloff, will exchange drum solos on Brubeck’s oft requested tour de force, “Take Five.” Matt is a Junior at Berkeley High School where he performs in the flagship Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble, one of the nation’s leading high school big bands for the past 40 years and known nationally and internationally as an incubator of talent and a citadel of swing.

The Eric Mintel Quartet’s members are Mintel, piano, Nelson Hill, alto, soprano sax and flute, Jack Hegyi, electric bass and Dave Mohn, drums, all five-star musicians. Mintel has said that “jazz provides the opportunity to really change people’s lives for the better. I’ve seen that happen over and over again where we bring people together through the music.” This concert will be Grand Finale of the 12th Annual Sonoma – Mendocino Coast Whale & Jazz Festival and A Season of Brubeck – To Dave with Gratitude.
